Friendly red here, looks like u couldn't have picked a better time to play us, Enrique, gerrard, hendo, sturridge all out!

I'm gunna go for a fast tempo game with a 2-1 win to us, no disrespect but you've been extremely lucky with your recent Victories, saying that, u always play well at home againts the big teams. if I was u I'd play 3 in the mid because we only have 2 fit central mids in Lucas and Allan, I'm worride come 70min mark we will tire and your pace is going to hurt us late on.
Just my view. Love your thoughts guys! Good luck! YNWA

We have Vertonghen, Chiriches and Rose injured and maybe Kaboul. 3 out of 4 first choice defenders is not great. I will go for a 3-1 to the spurs.

Crafty,

I am an avid season ticket holder at the lane, but spurs to score 3 goals in a league game?

I fancy 1-0 or 1-1

Anyone else think we should make Sandro club captain, The Beast is our most important player in my opinion and would make it easier to drop Daws when everyone is fit?!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

My captain would be Vertonghen. He is such a commanding leader, but also because I know Barca are sniffing out for new CB's

Agree0 Disagree0

Either of those would be ideal but Vertonghen for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sandro is a beast and a fantastic player, but he doesn't need the captains armband.
Vertonghen all day long for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Vert for me as well, although Sandro is a beast I agree! These two along with Lloris and Chiriches should be the spine of our team every week!

You said Defoe never scores against the top clubs and just hides in these games. I decided to check his record since he joined us in January 2004 up to the end of last season.

He has scored 133 goals, but I have only been able to trace 129 of them. Of these, 115 were against English clubs and 14 were in European football.

In that time he has scored against all the top clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle and Everton and Aston Villa. His favourite opponent has been Manchester City, against whom he has scored 9 goals in 9 separate games, including 3 in recent years. This is followed by Newcastle (4), Aston Villa (4 in 3 separate games), Liverpool (3), Manchester United (2), Chelsea (2), Arsenal (1) and Everton (I).

In total, he has scored 26 goals in 25 separate games against the biggest clubs in the Premiership. This represents 20% of all his goals for us. I wish it had been a lot more, but I doubt if any other Spurs player has a better record against these clubs.

You were wrong.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Clearly Defo is good enough for a premiership team, but a top six team?

You look at the Cities, Uniteds, etc etc

Top class finishers. Give them a chance in a 'big' game and they bury it. That's all I'm saying.

Last season and the season before, we created so many chances that he failed to convert.

Look at Saturday as an example.

And you speak to anybody involved in the game besides big Sam at West Spam, the stats don't paint a true reflection.

Agree0 Disagree0

And you say city were a top team in 2004. And 9 goals against them. Is that recent? I think not.

Agree0 Disagree0

I too have access to soccer post for Defos stats!

Again, how many of those goals v's the so called top teams in the 'PREMIER LEAGUE' has Defo scored.

Taxi.

Agree0 Disagree0

2 goals v Man United since 2004 in the 'PREMIER LEAGUE'. Some return that. Both losses by the way.

Agree0 Disagree0

I take it that your stats are all from Premier League games?

Manchester City (9), Newcastle (4), Aston Villa (4), Liverpool (3), Manchester United (2), Chelsea (2), Arsenal (1) and Everton (1)

So in 8 years playing each team twice, that's 16 times he could have played each of those teams.

Newcastle 4 goals in 16 games
Villa 4 goals in 16 games
Liverpool 3 goals in 16 games
United 2 goals in 16 games
Chelsea 2 goals in 16 games
Arsenal 1 goal in 16 games
Everton 1 goal in 16 games

Take City out of the situation and the stats are not exactly what a top strikers return should be. Not. And You were classing City as a top team back in 2004?

Yes I guess I was wrong.

You miss the point.

If you look at Defoe's overall record, something quickly becomes clear. In his 8 years at Spurs, he has only rarely been an automatic 1st choice player. There is a reason for that. He doesn't score enough goals against anybody.

He is an out-and-out goalscorer, but his goals have always come in fits and starts. For a few weeks he will score for fun but then he always goes through a long barren spell when you wonder if he will ever score again.

None of this is in dispute and it is not the reason I responded to your original post.

What irritated me was your totally unwarranted and unjust claim that Defoe never scores against the big teams and that he hides in these games.

His record clearly shows that he is as effective (or ineffective) in these games as in any others. His record against them is not great, because he is not great, and because they are the top sides and are going to be the most difficult for any of our players to score against.

However, what really rattled my cage was your thoughtless slur that he hides in these games. Defoe doesn't hide. In fact, the most persistent complaint I read on this site is that he is too greedy. He always wants the glory of scoring himself when sometimes a judicious pass is the best option.

That is a fault, but is not the fault of someone who hides.

I still think you were wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

KM, you are missing my point, I am making my assessment in relation to Defo going missing on what I have seen happen over the years v the top teams, something that I do day in day out being involved in the game. He is often very easily marked in these games, shoots from unrealistic positions because of that, he lacks the ability (during the big games) to do what a top striker does, and make the difference. so how is that a thoughtless slur. try not getting caught up in the emotion of a game and actually watch him at the Lane next time he plays against a top 4 team. you might learn something. or are you another armchair fan.

If it helps you evaluate my comments, I have been a fan since childhood and have only missed a handful of home games each year since 1964. I managed to maintain this attendance record during the 15 years I lived in Canterbury and Milton Keynes.

I have been a Season Ticket holder since about 1982.

During this time I have sometimes doubted the commitment and the 'intestinal fortitude' of a number of our players but Defoe has not been one of them.

Agree0 Disagree0

KM, it would appear that you may therefore be due a blankety blank cheque book and pen.
