Adebayor is a disgrace. His team get ko'd on Sunday and instead of getting the flight on monday that was laid on for them he decides to wait till today to get that flight. He used his extra days to squabble with team mates with the police involved apparently. Not only did muck us about waiting until Jan 9th for his decision to even play in the Acn but knowing our striker dilemma at the moment he just does what he wants. I really hope we get rid in the summer, we were warned about him and now we know why.

There are no guarantees about any new player so you have to take risks - there is no alternative. The question is how much risk can you afford to take? That varies from club to club.

Drogba at 24m or Mata at 23.5m would have been a massive risk for Tottenham, but not for Chelsea. As it turns out, both risks would have been well worth taking, but there is no way you can know that in advance. The expensive flops I mentioned in my earlier post were all good players - they just weren't the right players for those clubs at that time.

There is one trap that we should be very wary about falling in to.

We all get frustrated when we fail to sign players because Levy wouldn't meet the asking price. It is tempting to say that if you think a player is worth £15m, why not pay £20m, if that is what it takes to get him? What difference does £5m make if he is the right player?

But what if he is not?

If you pay too much for a player you usually pay too much to him as well. Bentley is a classic example. We paid 15m or 16m for him and undoubtedly gave him wages to match. It soon became clear that he wasn't right for us so we might just as well sell him. He might not be a 15m player, but surely he would have been good value for someone at a more realistic 6m or 7m.

So why is he still on the books?

The probable answer is that the clubs that might want to buy him can't afford his wages and the clubs that can afford his wages don't want to buy him. This doesn't mean Bentley is suddenly a totally worthless player: he is just an unsellable one. We will probably end up running down his contract with loans and releasing him for nothing.

If you pay too much for a player and it doesn't work out, don't think you can always cut your losses by selling him at his true market price. You might end up getting nothing at all. We can't afford to do that too often.

we also missed suarez for 23 mill.
now he is easily worth above 50 mill.

I think we're all forgetting how we didn't have a European reputation two years ago. We all love spurs but let's be honest up until last year we didn't have the recent history of top finishes to get top players, without grossly overpaying. I mean this as no offense, just a reality check
