It is not a question of giving Defoe another chance. He is going to America next year, as Eminence (Oracle) has been able to authoritatively confirm.

AVB knows he only has a few games to save his job, so he can't worry too much about the longer term. He has to pick the best players currently available, whatever their limitations. Defoe's form this season is nothing special, but at least he causes the opposition a few problems: you know he is on the pitch, even if he sometimes frustrates you. Soldado has been contributing so little in recent games that we have effectively been playing with ten men.

With his job at stake, AVB couldn't allow that to go on any longer.
