As much as I love Gomes, he has lost the confidence of his defence, the fans and most importantly himself and he will be moved on.

As for being 40, if you're good enough, you are young enough. Would United have won the league without Van der Sar this year? Probably not. Would Italy have won the World Cup in 82 without Dino Zoff? Probably not. Both 40. Fact.

Gomes will stay mate. i'm 100% sure of this. Whats going to happen when he retains his spot as number one next season. What a waste of wages this will have been.
Redkanpp has just brought us more hassle. We could have officially sorted our keeper crises out once and for all by bringing in young quality such as Neuer or Stekelenburg.

Lets be realistic here, Freidel is not and never has been in Van Der Sars league. He appeared on the big stage for Liverpool and was a Flop. He is not and never has been a world class keeper.

I am not saying that 40 is too old to be good Van Der Sar & Zoff are facts that I was aware of (they retired soon after right?), I am saying that 40 is too old to move to a new club and be the new number one. That would be foolish to sign a 40 year old to be your choice for the FUTURE. Azza is right, it should have been someone younger, with more fight in his blood. First may I emphasize the point that you have obviously missed: Friedel WAS NOT A VILLA PLAYER when we signed him. He was OUT OF CONTRACT. So perhaps Villa did not offer him a new contract. Perhaps Spurs offered more money than Villa. Perhaps Friedel was offered contract but told that he would be 2nd choice anyway from now on. Perhaps Friedel wants one last shot of European competition football. Perhaps we were offering Friedel a longer contract which is important for someone at the end of their career. Friedel has NOT been told that he will sit on bench, but he has been told that he will fight it out for a start with Gomes. Maybe Friedel will be the Europa league keeper. We do not know. But you cannot assume that Friedel gave up a first team spot at Villa.

I Understand that Freidel was out of contract mate. I just feel that if Freidel turns out to be a number 2 then it was a complete waste of time and wages.
I'm sure a Young keeper plus Cudicini could have pushed Gomes for that number one spot.
Cudicini installed confidence back into the team with the last few games he played last season. Surely he deserves a shot in the Europa league because of his patience and has not once complained.

The questions is, whats going to happen at the end of next season if Freidel isn't getting games and gets isolated like Pletikosa. Not saying that this will actually happen but what if it does. He could retire early along with cudicini and then we're left with butter hand Gomes.
Then we're back to square one, we'll all be panicking over a new keeper.

This could turn out to be poor business,
but i guess we'll just have to wait and see, then we can judge.

p.s I think we are the only team to have 3 keepers in our 25 man sqaud. How stupid is that.

You know what lads. I think i have been a bit to harsh here. I have come to realise that Signing Brad Freidel will have a positive effect on Gomes. I think Gomes will gain alot from Brads arrival.

99% of transfer rumours that get posted up on here come from press/media outfits and, probably 99% of those rumours ( as ive said over and over again but idiots like you can't read or understand) eminate from players agents out to make a few million pounds commission selling on their clients. Sir, you don't have to be an Arsenal fan to be a plum, as you have demonstrated. Any sensible Yid, infact any sensible Football club supporter takes the average rumour with a pinch of salt. If you actually knew anything about Spurs, which you dont, you would know that we tend to do the deal then announce it, not the other way round. Umm, im not to sure what you are on about?!?! Im big enough not to slate Arsenal, Im a realist, they are a technically gifted side that lacks steel and has a manager with deep pockets but short arms ( that's the only reason I can see why he hasnt invested in a few top, top class players to make them genuine title contenders) In saying all that, ive got no time for gooners coming on here and rubbishing us when their own club fails season in and season out to win anything. They have zero chance of winning the title and zero chance of winning the champions league because they are a frilly nightdress when they need to be a bullet proof vest. They lack the mentality, as we do, to win a title ( Man U had the worst squad they ever had in a decade yet still won a title thanks to balls of steel and the best manager around) and Barca are light years ahead of everybody else making everybody else also rans for the big trophy. Players ARE attracted to clubs that want to win things BUT will they continue to be attracted to Arsenal when, over and over again, they fall to pieces and win nothing? I reckon that makes them no better than any other club pushing to be Englands No1, certainly nothing to boast about. You know what they say. "People who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones. ."

I can't STAND Harry Redknapp. Fu** off to England.
Friedel is the wrong buy. we're building a team for the future yet he decides to link us and bring in OLD men. He has to go. This time next season we will be looking for another keeper. This sums up Harry and his policy on who to buy. We must get rid of Harry now before we start to decline as a club.
The only good thing i can say is i hope the Friedel signing is a statement of how quickly we will be doing business. I highly doubt this signing will satisfy our best players.
Gomes will still be our number 1 next season.

Azza, I reckon you have got this one wrong mate! Its clear that Gomes isn't a pair of safe hands, Friedel is a very, very good keeper, his age isn't a factor really. Consider this: If we get one season out of Friedel and that helps us secure a Champions league place then its a good job done. He is highly experienced and will give confidence to the back four, something that Gomes hasnt done. Id agree that, in certain areas of the pitch, age will make a difference but, as far as goalkeepers are concerned, they are super fit and, nowdays, can easily play beyond their 40th birthday. Friedel is going to be a short term solution, he will bring confidence, stability and belief back into our team.Dont be suprised, if he is signed, to see him be our No1 keeper. I actually think Gomes will be gone by the start of the season.

I don't doubt his ability because he is a good keeper, i just feel its going to cause us more headache next season when we'll end up looking for another keeper. Cudicini has 1 year left till he retires and Freidel isn't exactly a young man.

I feel we should have used this transfer window to splash cash on a young, athletic proven keeper such as Neuer. I'm sure someone like Neuer could bring stability back into the team.

Nevertheless i do agree with your comment. He may bring confidence, stability and belief back into the team but for how long? He may end up retiring at the end of next season, especially if he's not number one. Then we have more headache. 2 retiring keepers and butter fingers Gomes. Then we're back to square one mate.

If Gomes does go i feel we will bring in another keeper. I doubt that though.

You alright Ed010. I believe Gomes will still be our number 1 next season. Maybe the Friedel purchase was made to help Gomes. If that's the case we need to get rid of our Goalkeeping coaches because they certainly aren't doing their job.

How can vdv be a s**t signing? not his fault crouch and defoe has a bad season, with a powerful striker vdv will shine more, especially with Lennon and bale on the wings
Agree 100% VDV is class and will come into his own with a better lone striker than the players we have at the moment. Bear in mind that our master tactician Redknapp actually played VDV on the right on several occassions, totally wasting all the things that the lad bought to the side. It was pointless anyway as he still came inside and played wherever he wanted to anyway which left a bloody great hole on said R/H side of the pitch. IF he can play in the hole behind a top class lone striker and infront of the midfield, we will see the best out of him.

VDV needs a quality lone striker to link up with and shine even more. Look how well we have started to pass the ball since his arrival. We make teams chase games. He has brought something special to White Hart Lane.
