We easily have one of the best squads in the prem and are in 9th in the league after playing dire football and losing to teams like W Ham and Newcastle. Mark Lawrenson said that he thought we were underacheiving and I agree.

I understand the finances but we have brought well and have the 2nd best squad in the prem imo.

The test of a strong squad is that it allows the manager to pick an effective, well-balanced, match-winning team in most games. In view of what has happened so far this season, I would be very dubious about your claim that we have the second best squad in the Premiership, but I hope you are ultimately proved right.

KM and I don't often agree but he's used my favourite word in football tactics; balance.
We don't have it.
Whether or not you agree with the idea of inverting wingers and effectively balancing your side in that way, we just don't have a clear set of personnel for the system he seems to be set on. Having no left back doesn't help when it means taking your best player out of his best position. Playing a quality finisher up front but giving him no service or support when he comes to the Premier League is like playing with 10 men, a couple of our CMs don't even seem to know themselves whether they're DMs or Playmakers and in some cases they're a little bit of both but not enough of either.
He needs to stick with some key personnel beyond just Vert (out of position), Lloris and Walker, nobody can guess the team after those three.

Re: "How thick is Dion Dublin on Motd 2. He thinks Tottenham are 'over-achieving' "

The past few years have been good for us. We have finished in 4th or 5th place 6 times in last 8 seasons. We are in not just a flash in the pan.

Nonetheless, Dion Dublin has a point when he calls this over-achievement. That is because we are operating on a significantly smaller income that any of our main rivals.

Last season, United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea all had revenues between 60% and 120% larger than ours. Even Liverpool's income was 30% bigger. In real terms that means Liverpool had £45m more to spend on players and wages and Manchester United had a staggering £181m more.

There is no substitute for good management, but money does make a difference. For one thing, it makes it easier to correct mistakes. In the long run the richer clubs generally come out on top. For example, after some unexpected results early on this season, three of the four biggest clubs are now clustered at the top of the table and who would bet against Man United soon joining them?

In the past 5 years our gross spending on players has been on a par with Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal (although not with Chelsea or City) but we cannot match them in wages and so cannot attract or retain the very best.

In fact, our purchases have been funded entirely by selling our best players, so our net spend has actually been negative over this period. But that cannot go on forever.

I fear that Bale might have been one sale too many.

What is the point of this partnership with Real if it only means they take our best players and let all their players go to our rivals. Have I got the idea of it wrong or is it just a waste of time.
