Well done to all the players and coaching staff including avb.
They got the regulars and the new boys to gel very quickly.

IMO we need a play maker a magician.

Again IMO: bale last day of the transfer window to real and modders in return. Any1 take that.

Also if bale goes I will start supporting barca as my Spanish Saturday/Sunday night team. Not because he left us but the way they started the whole thing up.

last season we would have drawn that match so :)))))

No don't want rat boy back at the club would love either pjanic or lamela at the club maybe even both but that's being greedy, if we cudnt get lamela i'd take pjanic anyday, i'd prefer either of them two then willian as seen on the net a few sources that were trying our best to sign him I think better value in pjanic or lamela

Agree0 Disagree0

Why would we want rat back now that he has supposedly said no interest in us he wants Man U. If he leaves RM.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't let your hearts rule your heads too much hey. We kept Modric for another season and he played well for us. We missed him knitting play together end-to-end, hardly ever losing the ball and picking clever passes to help open teams up and creating space for others.
If Bale goes and he came back it would not be a bad thing. Top quality and totally proven compared to many players we're linked with for £25-30m.
That all said, no way I can see it happening anyway so no debates necessary.

I think I have to eat humble pie today. Well done to the team, 1st game and 3 points. Now for the humble pie. Well done to DANNY ROSE I thought he played excellent and between him and Paulinho they were the standout performers for me.

The team on a whole is IMO going to gel really well and when they get more familiar with how each other plays, I can see a few very clear results by 3 and 4 goals.

It showed me that we are going to create an abundance of chances and it looks like goals can come from all over the field. Saldado, Paulinho, Vertonghen Chadli, Sigurdsson the potential looks frightening.

Even Lennon looks hungry for the ball. The future looks really bright!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

A solid first outing against a stubborn opponent. But of our 18 shots only 3 were on target. That will not cut it against better teams . if Gayle of Palace were better I think we would have struggled to escape with all 3 points. The last 20 mins we were on the back foot, hanging on and looking to break. We still lack some one that can make the type of passes from the middle that Modric did and even Hudd was capable of.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we might yet regret not getting Benteke as I think that might be someone we could have used . If and when Bale goes we need a few players yet at the attacking end . The defence looks ok and so does the middle of the park its the Bale spark we seem to miss . Would give Townsend a run out on the wing as he has pace and a fantastic finish when he gets it right . Could be the missing spark in some games at least .

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree we were not at our best but that was the 1st real challenge and at least we won. Also the players will get sharper the more games they play.

As for that creative midfielder, I am sure that AVB has a quality player in mind however I was really happy with ALL the new signings and we are stronger than this time last year.

Palace were a very good stubborn team to start our new season against and yes if Gayle was sharper himself we may of had a bit more to worry about but as I said it was the 1st game of the season and we are only going to get MUCH better as the season goes on.

Agree0 Disagree0

I know he didn't play for long but I thought Capoue was the standout player, he ripped Palace to bits.

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to admit, all new signings played well and will only get better. D.Rose also has IMO played a very good game! (I have already eaten humble pie for my comments a few days ago).

Like many people are stating we need a creative midfield player to provide the key passes to unlock those stubborn (Palace type) defences, well I was wrong about Rose so why not give Carroll a chance? or failing that why not go and get that Marco Reus lad?

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, if this is how we can play the first game I'm looking forward to the possibilities as these players get to know each other better. Bale instead of Siggy would be such a huge upgrade, it doesn't bare thinking about if/when he leaves, playing behind Soldado and interchanging with him, Chadli and Lennon. would create problems for every PL defense. And that's not to say Siggy isn't a decent player.

Agree0 Disagree0

I see links tonight 18/08 about us and Willian . I fear this is money that could be better spent . Would rather have Mata for that money than a guy untested in a major league . Come on Liverpool for once sign a player we are both linked with .

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Rose will get better with each game played. He was in some good positions today and has got good speed. Is he at the required level of a top 3 club, not yet which is why a replacement would be brought in but expect rotation.

Agree0 Disagree0

I liked most of what we did. There's still some chemistry to work on - people making runs and others not working out where they were going or there being some missed passes. But benefit of the doubt that we will improve that.

Also glad that we were not defending corners with zonal marking!

Agree0 Disagree0

I watched game and still have my doubts about rose. I've always said he's good enough for teams outside top 6 were we will dominate. Until he proves it against a big club ( I doubt he will ) then we can judge. To early to judge him against arguably the worst team in the league.
Yid D.

Agree0 Disagree0

Would like to say, well done to everybody at the club, lots of new faces but stuck to the task and can get a hell of a lot better! Still not sure about Rose, but time will tell . Only real bugbear is Dawson . Please stop trying to play 30/40 yard passes, you can't do it, we don't want you to try it either!

Agree0 Disagree0

Early days, ideal opponents really because they were committed, resolute and had a go so, a decent test but one we could come through. We definitely should've wrapped it up with Sig and Defoe, few loose passes, some inter-change play not quite clicking where personnel are new and finding match-fitness at Prem pace. Overall though, very promising with lots of potential. Paulinho was ok, looked to try and slow himself down compared to the overall pace so, if he finds his way and gets up with the intensity he could be very good. Chadli, has something, will just need to see if more experience and confidence raises his game and whether he'll be in the first XI automatically or a squad player. Soldado, just looks like he will definitely score goals if given chances. No good in the air but technically brilliant and great movement. Capoue, very exciting, mobile, strong, good range of passing - even more impressive considering he had to come on later in the game and just pick up the pace as Palace were having a go.
If Bale stays, we really have a great team, Sig did well but Bale is another level and adds that pace, creativity and goal-threat all in one.
Hope Kaboul can stay fit and Sandro didn't even feature. I'd keep Townsend as a raw talent to throw on when we need to chase a game and play him in Europa League and Cup games too.
Hoping the Georgia trip doesn't leave us with a tired, flat, Sunday-syndrome next weekend. At least Swansea play on Thursday as well but they are at home with an easier game. Time for Carrol, Ade, Defoe, Townsend, Naughton etc to play. Would be great to get another win and head into the derby with momentum.

Agree with Cockney Magic, I thought Capoue had an excellent 30 minutes on Sunday. He not only looks strong but can pass the ball well.A good signing. hopefully.

Great to be up and running but the only complaint is that we still haven't got a play-maker to replace Ratboy and its in games like this one that it really shows. Palace huffed and puffed a lot but with a little more creativity we could have put 4-5 past them and it was needlessly close. Actually still not convinced by Rose either but that's less of a pressing issue!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

With Mata not playing today anyone think he is the one we should be trying for rather than the guys from Roma . If Defoe stays then its looking like we play the one striker in our games with players supporting something Mata does better than most . Chelski will never sell to us which is a real pity . {Ed008's Note - Mata didn't play due to an injury.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Aug 2013 18:36:55
have to agree

Agree0 Disagree0

Mata would be great, but highly unlikely . Chelski may have the one midfield that could be the equal or better than ours. I think they have more attacking and creativity than we have shown yet . but with the new guys we have time to improve.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rather have Pjanic than Mata, better value and the Chavs wouldn't sell to us anyway .
Also, if Levy is going to let Bale go, hope he makes them wait until the final minute, makes Bale ask for a transfer as his 5% gain would pay for a few thousand new seats in our new ground and its his choice to go, and screws them for every penny he can! Levy, you have won me over a lot recently, thank you!

Week 1:
New player scores on debut.

Actually found a player who can score penalties.

Actually awarded a penalty in over a year.

3 points above Arsenal.

Happy days.

Not a shabby first half performance against a team newly promoted and looking to start with the confidence they are carrying from last season.

2 things that really grate on me:

1 - Michael Dawson - Great Defender - Great Loyalty - But he cannot pass a ball more than 10 yards so why does he constantly try

2 - Lennon's inability to pick the right ball. season after season we see chance wasted by picking the wrong ball - frustrating from such a promising player

Happy with both Danny Rose and Siggurdson though who were maybe the 2 who had to prove something

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What do you reckon about chadli? Don't know if it's just me but I think I'd rather see Townsend on the pitch

Agree0 Disagree0

Lennon is just not good enough to start for this revamped Spurs in my opinion, would be great to bring his legs on as a super sub but We need Lamela

Agree0 Disagree0

My impressions

lloris - best defensive goalkeeper in the league. Did anyone else get a minor heartattack and then major relief when he pulled off that inch perfect tackle on phillips?

paulinho - not used to england, looked for a few fouls that don't happen in england. Looks alright but needs time to settle and get used to the culture

Rose - some good defensive decisions, impressed by his speed. Needs experience but satisfactory

Chadli - is a little selfish but that might be useful once he finds his touch

Soldado - excellent build-up and vision. He didn't look like a serious threat but still wasnt disappointed by his debut

capoue - surprised me the most. Slotted in perfectly and his comfort on the ball is impressive. Had some ambitious passes, which might yield different results when we're behind.

Overall happy about the 3 points, but swansea won't be as easy

Agree0 Disagree0

Think Chadli will have better games.

I was dissappointed with 25 mins to go that townsend didn't get a run out . His pace would have caused a lot of problems

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Soldado's movement and first touch was very impressive, looked to tire before coming off, hopefully will get stronger as settles in to the pace here.

His lack of real opportunities worried me more than anything else in the game. But then Siggy and JD had chances to put the game away and failed . can't be doing that at this level, it will cost us points.

Agree0 Disagree0

Defoe's finishing is pathetic, he missed soo many chances last season it was painful and his finishing today was his usual rubbish. He has a lot to say buy hardly ever delivers.

Was gutted when I heard bale may be joining real, now I'm just bored of the who thing! With or without him the squad looks strong this year and midfield 3 of sandro, paulinho and dembele looks immense! Coupled with the 20+ a season striker we have in Soldado we are going to have a great season coys!

It's a new season and I couldn't be more excited, as a young member I can't remember us ever having a better squad than this year. All the new signings look excellent and I think that's 60 million very well spent.

For Palace I hope to see:
(433) Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Kaboom/Verts, Rose, Capoue (Sandro if fit), Paulinho, Dembele, Lennon, Soldado, Chadli.
Would like to see that with Bale (hopefully), Holtby, Siggurdsson and Townsend to form our core, with Carroll and others as back ups.

I genuinely think that injuries permitting and with the retention of Bale that squad is as good as any in the league.

Thoughts or adjustments?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

While I like the line up for later on in the season we can't expect the newbies to start right away like lloris didn't start over friedal last year.

Lloris
walker dawson, kaboul, rose
parker dembele paulinho
Lennon Defoe Chadli

Thats my prediction. I know why but avb trusts parker, maybe he likes the circles he makes in our half of the pitch. I do have to admit as annoying as it is his ball retention rate is through the roof and that kind of experience means something.

I think soldado and capoue are too new to be ready. but this could be a good debut for rose against a newly promoted side. Of course substitutions could give any of the players an opportunity. Maybe kaboul might get a few minutes as he needs them for match fitness.

I know i'm more conservative in my team by placing parker/defoe there but I think avb is that kind of guy. He values 3 points above all else and by using experience at first he is (hopefully) ensuring that. Of course the subs can come in at 60min if he really wants them to get a go, but we can risk conceding a goal if we let a tactically unprepared player on the pitch. It'll show, especially after a little fatigue. They have to work within our system. Soldado is less risk as a striker, but again he is not epl proven and defoe is so let's give our old boy a chance and let soldado ease into the lane with less pressure, hopefully coming on as we're winning.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry but in my view there is no way Saldado isn't starting today! All will be revealed very soon but confident our number 9 will make a starting debut today.

Literally can't wait for KO :)

Come on youuuuuuuuuuu Spurrrrrrrs!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Urmm just no parker is gone and vert has to play if he is fit, I like defoe, but u don't pay 26 mill for a bench warmer
